A 1950s studio portrait, black and white, silver-gelatin grain and all, with a caption typed beneath it like a line pasted into a family album. Vintage fifties manners, present-day rudeness.
A studio portrait straight out of somebody's family album, pearls, fur collar, the full silver-gelatin seriousness of 1950s portraiture. Beside it, pasted in like a caption clipped for the scrapbook: "Tea first. Then civility."
Whoever gets this mug already knows the order of operations. Nobody civil before the kettle's done its work.
The image wraps right round the mug in one continuous band, the portrait on one side of the handle, the caption on the other, so it reads whole whichever way it's picked up.
